SCREENSHOT: How to Initially Set Up your RFID Scanner (Updated December 2021)

NOTE to the IT Department: 
If you are installing this program for one of your users, please make it available for all users. To do this, copy the SerialMagicPro.exe file from this folder: 

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\SerialIO.com\SerialMagic Pro

to this folder: 

  • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

(The scanner should  NOT be plugged in at this point.)

Download the SerialMagic Pro Application from this website:  https://serialio.com/downloads/serialmagic/ds/

On the Support tab, select Downloads.

Go to the SerialMagic area and click on Read More.

Look for the SerialMagic Professional section for Windows 10,8,7.  The most current version is 6.6.7.5 (December 2021).  Download.

(This takes a minute or so.  You may have to click on .exe file to prompt execution.  If Windows asks for permission to load, select Yes.)

Agree to the Software Licenses & Limited Warranty:

Select where SerialMagic Pro will be installed (unless you have a reason to install it elsewhere, just click the Install button to take the default location).

Install ( Yes) the Scanfob Drivers:

Install ( Yes) the Opticon USB Drivers:

Acknowledge ( OK) the Successful Cradle Driver Installation:

Acknowledge ( OK) the Successful OPN Driver Installation:

Acknowledge ( OK) the Successful ATEN Driver Installation:

Install ( Yes) the KCD Drivers:

Install ( Yes) the Bluesnap Drivers:

Extract FTDI CDM Drivers.

This will open the Device Driver Installation Wizard; select Next.

Select I accept this agreement and Next.

Select Finish.

Acknowledge ( Close) the Successful Installation:

Plug the USB cable from the RFID reader into a USB slot on your computer.  (You should use the same port each time you plug the cable in.)  Windows should automatically search for and install the appropriate driver.  If it does not automatically open, click on the SerialMagic Pro icon on your desktop.

Select How the Scanner will connect:  

Select Cabled connection.

Select IceKey UHF scanner (usually next to the last on the far right).

Click Next

Select the COM Port of the RFID Reader (where the scanner is plugged in).  Typically, the correct port is COM3 or COM4 and identified as (USB Serial Port).  Click Next.

Select How will the IceKey UHF scanner be used?  Like a keyboard, data posted to cursor location.  Next.

Acknowledge the Successful Setup.  Finish

Save ( OK) the Scanner Settings.  This will show up; let the setup continue until this screen goes away.

Acknowledge ( OK) that SerialMagic Pro found the scanner.

Stop the communication between computer and scanner.  You will now configure the SerialMagic Application.

Application Settings box will be available after you STOP the application (above).  (Don't QUIT; that causes SHUT DOWN.)

Configure Global tab settings as follows.

Then select RFID tab and configure as follows.  Set the power around 15-20.


Then select Filtering tab and configure as follows.

Then complete by selecting OK.

Start the communication between the SerialMagic application and the scanner.

Acknowledge ( OK) that SerialMagic Pro found the scanner again! (This screen does not always appear.  You may receive a different notification.)

To confirm the scanner is working: Open Notepad application (go to Start button, then select Notepad under Window Accessories).  Click within the Notepad screen.  Scan an RFID label.  The number should appear in Notepad.  If not, email us at help@helmettracker.com and we will help you troubleshoot your setup.
